Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site
Richmond, VirginiaH.F. Lenz Company is undertaking rehabilitation of
the Maggie L. Walker house. This two-story, Victorian house, with
Italiante detailing, was built in 1883 and consisted of nine rooms.
Successive additions were made to the home as Maggie Walker became more
affluent in the Richmond Financial community. The home now serves as a
museum with original furnishings. This site, located in the Jackson
Ward National Historic Landmark District, illustrates her extraordinary
life.
HFL is currently designing new fire and intrusion detection systems for
the Maggie L. Walker House and renovating four neighboring buildings
which make up the Historic Site. The additional four structures will
be used as exhibit, office, and archival storage space. Special care
is being taken so the historic fabric of the structure is not disrupted and
the detection devices are kept out of public view.
