2002 Energy Star Building Label
Mellon Union Trust Building
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Presented to the Union Trust Building for organizational commitment,
superior energy management, and energy performance accomplishments.
The H.F. Lenz Company received recognition for validating the energy and
environmental performance of the facility.
The H.F. Lenz Company provided complete mechanical, electrical, and
plumbing/fire protection design services to renovate the 11-story, 668,000
sq.ft. Union trust Building to resemble the original building--the Union
Arcade--as it appeared in 1917. The building did not have central
heating, ventilation, or air conditioning systems. The electrical
system was outdated, and there were no central controls. H.F. Lenz
Company designed the new systems to be unobtrusive to preserve the
building's status as a registered landmark.
Key features included:
 |
Integration with a 3,200-ton remote chilled water plant |
 |
A unique smoke management design to restrict smoke migration |
 |
Industrial grade automatic temperature controls interfaced with a
digital fire alarm system to provide building control from a central
command center |
 |
The introduction of air through furniture-quality kiosks in an
historically-sensitive space to preserve a portion of the building's
original ornate ceiling |
 |
A new hot water heating system that uses radiant heating panels
installed in the ceiling to provide more comfort and more usable space |
 |
Alternate electric service for increased reliability |
 |
Telephone and data wiring flexibility to provide for current and
future needs |
